Running for HYROX: easy, threshold and intervals

Eightpace training guide · Reviewed by a certified HYROX trainer · 7 October 2026

Give every run a purpose

An easy run, a sustained controlled effort and repeated faster efforts create different demands. Combining all three at once can make the intended session hard to understand.

Easy means conversational

Full-sentence conversation is a practical effort cue. Zone 2 in a five-zone model is not the same as Zone 2 in every research paper. Avoid borrowing heart-rate percentages without knowing the model.

Intervals need a baseline

Six or eight 1 km repetitions are session options, not universal beginner prescriptions. Volume, pace and recovery must reflect current training and the wider week.

What the evidence can tell us

A 30-runner trial compared intensity distributions over ten weeks. Both groups improved; the whole-group difference was not significant. It does not prove an exact HYROX running schedule.
